Dear Translate.org.za Supporters,

Translate.org.za is part of the emerging African Network for
Localisation (ANLoc). The network covers a number of sub-projects, each
one addressing a specific issue with technology and language in Africa.
The sub-projects are lead by passionate people from around Africa and
Europe. We have the privilege of working on a number of these projects
and also of co-ordinating the overall project. Funding for the
initiative is provided by the Canadian International Development
Research Centre (IDRC).

As many of you are passionate about Africa in general and not
specifically South African language I thought you'd be interested in the
following initiative from ANLoc that needs you help; either as a
volunteer or as someone who can recruit experts to help.

But lets let Martin Benjamin who leads the locale sub-project elaborate:

ANLoc, the African Network for Localization, has started an initiative
to build locales for over 100 African languages. The project is already
working with volunteers on about 25 languages from around the continent.

You can view a presentation about the initiative at:

http://kamusiproject.org/en/100locales

The main requirements for a volunteer are:

1) literate in the target language
2) comfortable using computers
3) can volunteer about 1 or 2 hours
4) finishes what they start

If you are willing and able to help, please look through the list of
languages, and contact locales at africanlocalization.net for us to set you
up for your language/ country combination.

The list of languages, along with statistics showing the remaining work,
is here:
http://o2.it46.se/afrigen/statistics.php?order=lang_name

You can also help by letting your colleagues from other African language
communities know about the project.

We want to build all of these locales in a few months, so please let me
know quickly if you can help out!

Thanks,
Martin Benjamin

PPS: If you want to work on checking data for South African locales and
languages please co-ordinate with Translate.org.za.
