Dear Friends,
Tomorrow, 16 September,
is Software Freedom Day
and Translate.org.za
will be participating at
an event taking place at
the Department of
Science and Technology
campus in Pretoria:
What is Software
Freedom Day?
Software Freedom Day is
an event held around the
world to celebrate Free
and Open Source
Software, to showcase
local initiatives in
Open Source and to allow
more people to learn
about Free Software.
Read more about the
Pretoria event here.
Events hosted by
Translate.org.za during
the day
Translate.org.za will be
doing the following
during the day:
* Localisation
sessions: learn
about
localisation and
watch localisers
in action.
* Translate at thon:
join us as we
translate some
Free Software
into Xhosa,
Venda, Afrikaans
and other
languages. If
you are a
professional
translator or
passionate about
your language,
why not help us
translate. Our
localisers will
be available to
give you a
guiding hand.
* Demos: See the
OpenOffice.org
suite, Firefox
web-browser and
Thunderbird
email client on
Windows and
Linux. In all
11 official
languages of
course.
* South African
keyboard: See
and use the
South African
keyboard that
allows you to
type in
Afrikaans,
Venda, Pedi and
Tswana. We'll
have copies for
sale.
* Talks: learn how
Translate.org.za
creates spell
checkers, why we
see Open Source
Software as the
only software
that can
realistically
bridge the
digital divide.
How do I get there?
The event takes place at
the Department of
Science and Technology's
Pretoria offices in
building 53, CSIR
Campus. There is a map
to the venue here.
Everyone is welcome and
entrance is free.
